How to Use

Get started in minutes with this simple guide.

Launch the App

  1. Open CaptureScreen from your Applications folder or Launchpad
  2. The main window will appear showing the preview area and device selector

Connect Your iOS Device

  1. Connect your iPhone or iPad to your Mac using a USB cable
  2. On your iOS device, you may see a prompt: "Trust This Computer?"
    • Tap "Trust" and enter your device passcode
  3. The app should automatically detect and select your iOS device
  4. You will see your iOS screen mirrored in the preview area
Note: If no device appears, click the Device dropdown menu and select your iOS device from the list.

Configure Save Location (Optional)

By default, captures are saved to your Downloads folder (~/Downloads).

To change the save location:

  1. Press Cmd + , (or click CaptureScreen β†’ Settings in the menu bar)
  2. In the Storage & Destinations section:
    • Click "Choose..." button
    • Select the folder where you want to save captures
    • A security prompt may appear – this is normal for sandboxed apps
  3. Click "Apply" to save changes
File Naming Format:
  • Default format: {Device}_{Date}_{Time}
  • Example: iPhone12_2026-02-27_18-30-45.jpg
  • You can customize this in the File Naming section

Grant Permissions (First Time Only)

πŸ“· Camera Permission (Required for Screen Mirroring)

  1. When you first launch the app, macOS will ask for Camera access
  2. Click "OK" or "Allow"
  3. This permission is required because macOS treats iOS screen mirroring as a camera input
Why Camera permission? macOS uses the AVCaptureDevice framework to access iOS screen mirroring. While named "camera," this entitlement is required for any external video input, including iOS screen capture.

  1. If you selected a custom save folder, you may be prompted to grant file access
  2. Click "Allow" or "Open" to confirm

Click the "Capture" button, or press Cmd + S

Click the "Record" button, or press Cmd + R to start/stop. A red border will pulse around the preview while recording.

  1. Click the CaptureScreen icon in the menu bar
  2. Select "Recent Captures" to see your last 10 captures
  3. Click any file to open it
